What DOES Coaching Feel Like?

When people first come to coaching, they often ask, “But what actually happens?” or “What should I expect?”

There’s no single answer, because every coaching conversation is different. But underneath the questions, I think what they’re really asking is:

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE COACHED?

Coaching gives you time to think.
Time to notice what you’re feeling, remember what you’re capable of, and make decisions that feel right for you.

A CLIENT ONCE DESCRIBED IT LIKE THIS:

“Coaching with Lynne has been transformative. She helped me re-focus my priorities, process difficult feelings, and develop concrete plans for the future. Her kind, humorous, and validating manner made all the difference.”– English Lead

That word — transformative — might sound big. But in coaching, transformation doesn’t always come with fireworks.
Sometimes it comes in the form of a quiet shift. A clearer thought. A sentence you hadn’t said out loud before.
A moment where you breathe out and realise you’ve been holding your breath.

WHAT COACHING OFTEN FEELS LIKE

  • Like having space to think — without pressure or judgement.

  • Like seeing yourself more clearly.

  • Like remembering strengths you’d forgotten you had.

  • Like making plans that actually fit your life, not someone else’s version of it.

There might be lightbulb moments. There might be silence.
You might laugh. You might cry. You might say, “I didn’t even realise I was thinking that.”
And you might leave feeling just a little more like yourself again.

WHAT IT’S NOT

It’s not a performance review.
It’s not therapy.
It’s not someone telling you what to do.

It’s a conversation — one where you get to bring your whole self, ask honest questions, and find new ways forward.

WHY IT MATTERS

In school life, so much of your energy goes outwards.
Coaching is a rare chance to turn inward, not selfishly, but supportively. To think deeply about your work, your wellbeing, your direction, and your values — with someone walking alongside you.

And often, that’s where change begins.
Not with doing more, but with noticing more. Not with fixing yourself, but with finding yourself again.
